I never really wanted to search for a diamond ring or a custom engagement ring or anything like that. That was never my thing, however it was certainly my future wife's thing. As you'll soon find out:
Here's the Ring Story
To set the stage, while I was growing up, all I ever saw were commercials for jewellery by the famous jewellery companies and diamond companies. It really wasn't impressive to me.
Additionally, growing up watching Star Trek made me think that material things weren't so important. I remember the marketing message was that "diamonds are a girls best friend". This never hit home with me because it didn't match the future I saw as more realistic, not that it was a terrible thing, it was just different.
Fast forward to being 20 years old with a young pregnant girlfriend who wanted to get married. She wants to seal the deal. She wants the engagement ring.
What do you do? Get a her a ring - That's what you do! At this stage of life, we just went to sears and bought something rather generic right off the 'showroom' floor. Looking back it would have been lovely to have some sort of custom engagement ring created. Though, when you're 19 or 20 years old you can't afford those things so you don't even try thinking about them.
I couldn't have been more wrong. Now that I see what's involved and the possibilities with custom ring design, I know that there's something for every budget.
Years later we would come to revisit the subject of rings and the limited jewellery that we actually both wear. One singular ring on my finger as a male was always more than enough for me. For my wife - One single ring was about enough as well. Perhaps the odd earring but no diamonds. Nothing crazy.
Upon revisiting the thought of buying some updated jewellery later in life to suit our more current lifestyle and more sufficient means, we talked to Paul Nudelman Custom Jewellers in Montreal Quebec.
Harris Nudelman, the fellow who runs the shop (and is a masterful designer of custom jewellery) was the one to help us out. We didn't go to Montreal in person, we talked to him on the phone and had some video chats to narrow down what more specifically we were looking for. Through this easy and digital communication, Harris was able to deliver.
He showed us some computer renderings of the jewellery and custom rings he had envisioned for us. The one ring he designed for me was a simple silver platinum ring with slight detailing. Just a band, simple, and nice. My wife's custom ring turned out to be something a little more extravagant with several diamonds and a handsomely creative use of materials. It was also fantastic.
What I loved about this process was that it was easy. It wasn't stressful. I wasn't worried that I was paying too much for what I was going to get. Because I could see it, I felt at ease with it. If there were something I didn't like, we were able to visualize and see everything in advance, and find a fix - All before anything is physically created. Very helpful.
What Paul Nudelman Custom Jewellers does with the computer is actively design your perfect piece of custom jewelry.
Harris is a great Jeweller, however, if you find yourself in Montreal, it's worth a call or visit!
It is interesting to note that by just talking to us on video chat (about what we like in terms of jewellery) Harris Nudelman was actually able to extract the concept from my imagination of the kind of jewellery that I was looking for. Whether it's an engagement ring or wedding band or earrings and pendants - It's all on the table! It's just a matter of articulating what it is you'd like, maybe picking from a few examples of previous jewellery creations that you like (that may be similar). Using that data, Harris is a able to put together something truly magnificent and indeed unique to you. Isn't that all you really want for your wedding day? Something unique to you and something that's only yours. It sure sounds great to me!

The Next Chapter in Montreal Jewellery
I've heard a lot about how Harris is located in one of the prime Jewellery capitals of the world, Montreal. I don't quite know if they have a 'Diamond District' similar to New York City, but there's definitely a large amount of jewellery stores spread out the greater Montreal area. It certainly makes for an entertaining and enlightening experience going from shop to shop to try to gain a deeper knowledge about the diamond and custom jewellery business. Super!
